The following conferences, forums, and other activities are designed and implemented to educate the UCI and surrounding communities about the diversity and value of the wealth of opportunities available about cultural differences that co-exist in our diverse student, faculty, and staff population.
Religious Diversity Forum
This annual interfaith celebration is co-sponsored by the UCI Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity (OEOD), the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), and the Alliance for Spiritual Community. The event is designed to foster understanding, tolerance, and collaboration among the many religious groups that co-exist on our campus and the Orange County community. Spiritual leaders and teachers from more than a dozen faiths provide a rich learning experience for the entire community by presenting a broad introduction to the different faiths and by exploring a variety of relgious themes. The Religious Diversity Forum is held on the UCI campus, and UCI students, staff, and faculty are invited to participate.
Note: 2005 RDF will take place at Chapman University.
South East Asian Archives & the Community Advisory Board
This educational resource was established in 1987 for the purpose of collecting historical information about the Southeast Asian refugees and "boat people" who immigrated and resettled in the United States. In 1990, the OEOD was asked to support and expand the efforts to collect archival materials by reaching both campus organizations and off-campus agencies. This collection is the only one of its kind in the libraries on the UC campuses.
Student Internship Program
The OEOD offers UCI students the opportunity to obtain practical work experience that compliments their academic research and/or practicums. Three to five interns are chosen each year for the following assignments:
- work on departmental projects and programs
- participate in meetings and conferences
- help plan outreach activities for the campus
- work cooperatively with other interns and staff on issues relevant to the university
Partnering with Community Agencies
To broaden the scope of presentations and to provide the best possible information to staff, students and faculty, the OEOD invites community agencies to participate in workshops. Following is a partial list of community agencies that participate in OEOD workshops:
- Orange County Mediation Center/OC Human Relations Commission
- Leadership Program of Orange County
- Archdiocese of Los Angeles
- Chapman University
- Veteran Affairs Hospital
- National Conference of Community and Justice
